Information on requirements to practise

The occupations in this category are regulated in all provinces, but not the territories. Where there is not a regulatory body (see list below), the profession is regulated through the provincial department of health.

The National Occupational Competency Profile (NOCP) prepared by the Paramedic Association of Canada defines the practice of Paramedicine in Canada. Primary Care Paramedic, Advanced Care Paramedic and Critical Care Paramedic programs are recognized provincially. Paramedics who drive ambulances or other emergency vehicles also require an appropriate licence from the relevant department of transportation.

The Canadian Medical Association (CMA) Conjoint Accreditation Services ensures national standards for the education of practitioners across Canada. The CMA accredits educational programs based on the National Occupational Competency Profiles developed by the Paramedic Association of Canada for Primary Care Paramedics, Advanced Care Paramedic and Critical Care Paramedic.

Information on assessment of qualifications

Although the regulatory bodies will provide information on the occupation in Canada, they are not set up to assess foreign credentials before you arrive.

If you need to have your credentials assessed before coming to Canada, you may contact an evaluation service and consult our Fact Sheet No. 2, "Assessment and recognition of credentials for the purpose of employment in Canada." Although the evaluation services offer expert advice on how qualifications obtained abroad compare with credentials obtained in a Canadian province or territory, the evaluation is advisory only and does not guarantee recognition of your qualifications for employment or certification purposes in Canada. Please note that they charge a fee for their services.
