The Canadian Information Centre for International Credentials

The Ministerial Statement on Credit Transfer in Canada was adopted in 2002 by provincial and territorial ministers responsible for education in Canada as part of a strategy to improve credit transfer across Canada. Given the differences in credit-transfer systems and postsecondary structures in the provinces and territories, the initial focus was on developing and enhancing the provincial and territorial transfer systems.

The latest Report of the CMEC Credit Transfer Working Group, 2012, highlights the activities, achievements, and future plans of each jurisdiction.

What is a credit transfer and an articulation?

Depending on individual circumstances, some transfer credits might be awarded for previously completed academic courses or other prior learning when seeking admission at an educational institution.

Credit systems were identified as a tool for:
  • promoting transparency in the recognition process; and
  • facilitating the mobility of qualified individuals.
