The Canadian Information Centre for International Credentials

Sources of information

The provincial and territorial ministries/departments responsible for education in Canada publish comprehensive up-to-date public information, and remain the primary source of authoritative information on their respective education systems. This is in line with the exclusive jurisdiction of provinces and territories over education, and their role as competent authorities in Canada.

CICIC is a service of the provinces and territories that assists with carrying out their obligations to provide information about UNESCO conventions related to qualification recognition. To that end, CICIC publishes information in English and French on Canada's education systems, quality assurance, institutions, programs, and academic credentials, in collaboration with competent authorities responsible for education in the provinces and territories.

Postsecondary educational institutions in Canada also play an important role in providing information, such as: academic programs offered, admission requirements, student services, housing, tuition fees, scholarships and student aid, and advising to prospective students. The yearly academic calendar, including those archived from previous years, may prove useful for academic credential assessors. Institutions are also responsible to issue official transcripts and degree certificates to students who have successfully completed an academic program. Academic credential assessors seeking to confirm academic document authenticity may contact the institution's admission office. Some institutions may use an internal or third-party trusted document repository service (e.g., MyCreds.ca) to facilitate the exchange of electronic student data with alumni students and other organizations. The CICIC Directory of Educational Institutions in Canada provides a starting point to locate relevant information.

Finally, a number of additional secondary sources of information are accessible online, and can support procedures related to the assessment and recognition of academic credentials.
