Information on requirements to practise

The practice of the medical profession is regulated in Canada. This means that the requirements to practise are set by each provincial and territorial medical regulatory authority.  If you know where you intend to settle and work in Canada, you may contact the appropriate provincial/territorial medical regulatory authority (see list below) for assistance.

Information on assessment of qualifications

International medical graduates (IMGs) can obtain information on steps to obtaining a licence to practise medicine on the Medical Council of Canada Web site. The Web site describes the overall process of obtaining a license to practice, including steps IMGs can take before arriving in Canada.

Information on assessment for immigration purposes, under the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP)

The Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP) is an immigration program administered by Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC), the department responsible for immigration to Canada. CIC has listed this profession as a priority occupation under the FSWP. To apply for immigration to Canada under this program, one of the requirements* is to obtain an “Educational Credential Assessment” (ECA) for immigration purposes from a CIC-designated organization.

The Medical Council of Canada (MCC) has been designated by CIC to provide an "Educational Credential Assessment" (ECA).
