Information on requirements to practise
The profession of chemist is regulated in the province of Quebec, where it is illegal to practise or use the title of chemist without being registered as a full member in the provincial regulatory body. In Alberta and Ontario, the provincial associations have "right to title" and to their designation, but the profession is not regulated in legislation. In these and other provinces and territories where the profession is not regulated, employment is subject to demand, and qualifications requirements are set by individual employers. Once you know where you will settle and work in Canada, contact the appropriate provincial body for more information on licensing procedures (see below).
The national Chemical Institute of Canada (CIC) is composed of three member societies: the Canadian Society of Chemistry (CSC), representing chemists; the Canadian Society for Chemical Technology (CSCT), representing chemical technologists; and the Canadian Society for Chemical Engineering (CSChE), representing chemical engineers. It provides a wide range of information on the varied fields in which chemical professionals work in Canada and their requirements for membership in the societies. Any requirements for practice of the profession are set by the provinces. For the practice of chemical engineering, consult our information sheet on engineers.

Information on assessment of qualifications
For Quebec, the professional organization (see list below) will provide information on assessment of your qualifications prior to your arrival in Canada.
For other provinces:
If you need to have your credentials assessed before coming to Canada, you may contact an evaluation service and consult our Fact Sheet No. 2, "Assessment and recognition of credentials for the purpose of employment in Canada." Although the evaluation services offer expert advice on how qualifications obtained abroad compare with credentials obtained in a Canadian province or territory, the evaluation is advisory only and does not guarantee recognition of your qualifications for employment or certification purposes in Canada. Please note that they charge a fee for their services.
