Information for foreign-trained dental hygienists

Information on requirements to practise

(3222) Verified: 2011 09 20

The occupation of dental hygienist is regulated in Canada, which means that to use the title of dental hygienist, you must be registered as a member in a provincial or territorial regulatory body. The regulatory bodies of dental hygienists set the standards for entry into the profession and for registering those who meet established standards of qualifications and practice. Once you know where you will settle and work, you should contact the appropriate regulatory body (see list below) for information on registration procedures.

You should note that, as a prerequisite to registration, the provinces of Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Ontario, and Saskatchewan require the National Certificate issued by the National Dental Hygiene Certification Board (NDHCB). You may contact the NDHCB for further information at:

National Dental Hygiene Certification Board (NDHCB)
1929 Russell Rd., Suite 322
Ottawa ON   K1G 4G3   Canada
Phone : 613-260-8156
Fax : 613-260-8511
Email : exam@ndhcb.ca
http://www.ndhcb.ca/

Membership in the national professional association, the Canadian Dental Hygienists Association (CDHA), is also required for dental hygienists who want to be registered to practise in Alberta, Manitoba, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, and Saskatchewan. In the other provinces and territories, membership in CDHA is voluntary and not required for registration. For further information on standards of practice, education, research, code of ethics, and regulation in dental hygiene, you may contact the CDHA at:

Information on assessment of qualifications

You should contact the appropriate regulatory body of dental hygienists directly to find out about assessment procedures, but most are not set up to assess foreign credentials before you arrive in Canada. Some regulatory bodies have made arrangements with evaluation services, which offer expert advice on how qualifications obtained abroad compare with credentials obtained in Canada.

The NDHCB uses the International Credential Evaluation Service (ICES), the International Qualifications Assessment Service (IQAS), or the World Education Services, Canada (WES) to assess foreign qualifications. These assessments are advisory only and do not guarantee recognition of your qualifications for employment or licensure purposes in Canada. Please note that the evaluation services charge a fee for their service.

You should note that if you are already licensed to practise your occupation in a province or territory of Canada, and later wish to work in a non-regulated occupation, employers may request that you provide them with a formal assessment of your academic credentials.

If that is the case, or if you wish to have your credentials assessed for a purpose other than practising a regulated occupation in Canada, you may consult our Fact Sheet No. 2, "Assessment and recognition of credentials for the purpose of employment in Canada" and contact an academic credential evaluation service. Although evaluation services offer expert advice on how qualifications obtained abroad compare with academic credentials obtained in Canada, their evaluations are advisory only and do not guarantee recognition of your qualifications for employment or certification purposes in Canada. Please note that evaluation services charge a fee for their assessments.
