Financial Assistance for Postsecondary Education

Scholarships, grants, and bursaries are available to both international students and Canadian students, often at the postgraduate level. They provide funds to students that do not need to be paid back. Scholarship funding in Canada is limited and highly competitive.

There are also various academic and student exchange programs that provide opportunities for international students to study in Canada, or for Canadians to study abroad.

Student loans, which do have to be repaid after graduation, are available to students who are Canadian citizens, landed immigrants, and protected persons.

Many Canadian universities and a few colleges have a limited number of scholarships or other forms of financial assistance. These vary from institution to institution. When you know what school you will be attending in Canada, contact their international education or financial aid offices for more information.

Comprehensive Scholarship Databases

  • International Scholarships: Canada is committed to participation in international study and research partnerships that build understanding among peoples, develop global citizens and leaders, and contribute to the development of nations. Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada (DFAIT) provides support to international scholars in Canada, which is often reciprocated by foreign governments which support Canadian scholars in their countries.
  • The Funding Guide Database: This guide, first established by the National Research Council of Canada to help its researchers take advantage of other sources of funding, is available to all Canadian researchers; it also permits foreign researchers to explore potential partnering opportunities with their Canadian counterparts.
